John Gilchrist, creator of Podium.

Built in a band room, not a boardroom.

Hi, I’m John Gilchrist, the creator of Podium—and I don’t work in tech.

I’m a full-time high school band and orchestra director. Throughout my career, I’ve had the opportunity to lead ensembles in performances ranging from the Midwest Clinic in Chicago to the Musikverein in Vienna.

As any music educator knows, the way you arrange an ensemble matters. Seating influences blend and balance, listening responsibilities, communication, and even the social connections between performers. Yet the tools available to directors have rarely encouraged thoughtful experimentation. Too often, creating a custom layout means fighting with rigid templates or adapting software that was never designed for ensembles in the first place.

I built Podium because music educators deserve a tool that works the way they actually think, teach, and rehearse.

After many hours of designing, testing, and refining it in the context of my own program, Podium has transformed the way I create ensemble layouts. It makes experimentation quick, flexible, and genuinely enjoyable—and I’m excited to share it with other educators and conductors.
